Asthma and cold weather
Asthma gets worse for many people during the cold weather. This is because cold weather, especially the cold winter dry air, triggers attacks in many asthma victims. The chilly night air is especially problematic for some as it’s not warmed with the sunlight at all.
So, if you have asthma and cold is one of your triggers, below are tips to stay alive and well despite the cold weather.
- Always take your asthma medications whether you have symptoms of impending attack or not. You don’t have to wait for the symptoms to start appearing before taking your medications. With asthma prevention is always much better and safer than cure.
- Clear your home of dust and other allergens that trigger your asthma to prevent similar triggers in the future. In cold weather, being exposed to too much dust and other allergens can trigger your asthma unlike normal weather, so there is the need to reduce your exposure to dust as much as you can.
- Don’t expose yourself to the cold during the course of your day. If you must go out in the cold, don’t remain out for too long. Use a nech and head scarf to insulate from yourself for the cold air.
- Stay away from people with colds or flu like symptoms. No sense in exposing yourself to an illness if you don’t need to.
- Dress warmly when going out into the cold. You won’t want to allow the cold to enter your body as this might trigger your attack. So dress very warmly to stay protected.
- Drink hot liquids like coffee or warm tea. These act to keep your core body temperature at a comfortable level.
- When sleeping at night cover yourself up to keep warm. If you have night asthma and cold is one of your triggers, then wear very heavy and warm clothes while sleeping to prevent attacks.
- Don’t engage in exercises that will induce your asthma, especially in the cold. Instead engage in exercises that are recommended for asthma patients, such as swimming.
- Always be prepared with your medication, especially your inhaler so that you can help yourself when an attack occurs without warning.
Doing the above will help you keep your asthma in check despite the cold weather. So we’re talking about a common sense approach to dealing with asthma and cold weather. Stay warm, stay away from people who appear ill, and be prepared!
