Asthma and obesity
Obesity has been known to adversely affect any condition, be it asthma or any other. So, if you or someone you know who has asthma wants to stay healthy. it’s important to know about asthma and obesity so that you can lose all the weight needed to be healthy.
Since asthma starts in the airways, people believe that too much fat works adversely to restrict the free flow in the airways. How true such assumptions are is the question. It’s a fact however that being obese means your system needs more oxygen to remain healthy and that means more work for those air passages.
There have been studies conducted to show the relationship between asthma and obesity. Most of these studies have shown that obese females are more likely to be affected by asthma than obese males.
The most recent of these studies analyzed 1001 identical and 382 fraternal same-sex twin pairs and found that there was indeed some association between obesity and asthma. This association was attributed to a common set of genetic factors.
Whatever the result of these studies, you should do all you can to avoid being obese, whether you are a male or female, no matter what your status as far as asthma is concerned.
This is because apart from asthma, obesity causes several other problems for people and should be avoided as much as possible.
More so, it has been agreed by many experts that people who lose weight show improved lung function and are less likely to develop lung related problems.
If your astham sufferer end up getting so obese that the fat rolls show around the neck and shoulders too, there is the chance that it could cause an obstruction to an already weakened air intake system. Obstructive asthma closes off the air passages and they don’t need additional pressure caused by the added weight pushing them closed.
Finally, below are some steps to take to lose weight as an asthmatic patient:
- Exercise often but not intensive exercises that leave you panting for breath. A recommended exercise is swimming.
- Drastically reduce your intake of sugar.
- Drastically reduce your intake of friend foods.
- Eat lots of vegetables and fresh fruits.
- Eat anti-inflammatory foods.
- Don’t eat heavy meals.
