Asthma triggers

Asthma triggers If you have asthma, triggers can set off a serious attack. If you know what these triggers are, you frequently avoid encountering the trigger and thereby avoid the asthma attack. Of course, a trigger for one asthma sufferer may not be a trigger for another. Each case is individual and some people are affects more by certain things than others. Generally, once you identify the things cause you to experience an asthma attack, lifestyle management along with medication can permit you to experience very few severe attacks.

Many, many people find that animal dander is an asthma trigger. If you have severe attacks during exposure to or immediately after being around a cat, dog, hamster, any furry pet, or even a pet parrot, you are probably reacting to the pet dander. If this is the case, do not allow any pets in the bedroom, or better yet, do not allow animals in the house. Even outdoor exposure can cause an attack for some people, so you may find that it is best not to own any pets.

Tobacco smoke is a common asthma trigger. Of course, if you have asthma, you shouldn’t smoke. Do not allow others to smoke in your home. Avoid places where there are heavy clouds of tobacco smoke.

Dust mites are a trigger common to many asthma sufferers. These tiny creatures live in sheets, blankets, rugs, mattresses and pillows. Each week, wash all bedding in hot water to remove the dust mites. Purchase dust mite-proof mattress and pillow covers and consider removing rugs or carpets from the bedroom.

Strenuous exercise can be an asthma trigger. It is important to get enough exercise, but you will have to learn what level of activity you can perform without experiencing an attack. Talk to you doctor about asthma and exercise and follow his or her instructions.

If you experience asthma attacks during the early spring, summer and fall more often than during the winter, pollen is probably the asthma trigger causing the frequent episodes. When pollen is heavy in the air, stay indoors and run the air conditioner to filter out as much pollen as possible. If you must go outdoors, you may find it necessary to wear a face mask to ward off serious attacks.

Many people with asthma have a reaction to sulfites. If this is an asthma trigger for you, avoid dried fruits, luncheon meats and other foods that contain them and stay away from beverages such as wine that contains this substance.
