Since the ancient times, tattoos have been one of the most widespread ways of body-decorating. Various cultures used them in their own ways for many purposes. Whether we are talking about leadership signs, to pure decoration symbols, they are seen from the ancient Mayans, Egyptians, Chinese to our days.

So what signification could a feather tattoo have? Feathers were used by the Indians for example in many ways: ornamentation, artworks, even for ceremonies and religious practices. The most commonly used came from crows, eagles and hawks. Each type has its own special meaning - representing a certain virtue of its possessor, some of them worked like a decoration. For example, the Pillager Chippewa tribe allowed one of its warriors to wear two feathers on their head for great merits of scalping an enemy. For capturing a rival they were allowed to wear five.
Another way in which the feathers were used was for decoration purposes only - they simply decorated their shields or weapons (mostly with eagle feathers).
The Celtics, for example had various significations for the feathers stated by the color - white meant purity, green meant money and fertility, red was courage, yellow was intelligence, pink meant love, gray - peace, and so on.

Besides this historical meaning, such a tattoo design can have a personal significance for you - you could be stating through this that you are feeling free as a bird in the sky. You could be stating that you are pure like a dove or strong as an Indian. You could tattoo a pink feather meaning love for the Celts..

It is also very important what part of your body you will choose for this - if you want everybody to see it you can do it on your arm - I’ve even seen one on the scalp of a skinhead guy - if you want it more intimate you can do it on your back, your ankle or even on your chest - that way you can only reveal it to whoever you want to..

This is a long discussion and a tough choice - but it’s your choice in the end. Whatever you do, choose something that you are sure it will represent you some time from now if you are thinking of a permanent tattoo.
