Getting fit for life after giving up smoking

Getting fit for life after giving up smoking The chances are if you’ve been smoking, you won’t have done much exercise. Always talk to your doctor before starting an exercise programme, especially if you were a heavy smoker.

Top tips...

* Make sure you feel comfortable in yourself when you are exercising - find someone to exercise with or join a local gym

* Choose a form of exercise that you really enjoy

* Try out different kinds of exercise

* Exercise regularly, ideally at least 2-3 times each week

* Don’t work too hard - exercise at a level where you feel comfortable. The old saying "No pain, no gain" is a myth

* Try to exercise for 15-30 minutes each time. During the course of one day, three 10-minute spells of exercise are likely to have as much benefit as a single 30-minute session

* Don’t be frightened to speak to the fitness instructor at your gym or a personal trainer

* Try and make exercise regular and make it part of your lifestyle

* Invest in sensible clothing and footwear. Comfort, safety and practicality are all important

* When you get the chance, use the stairs and walk or cycle in favour of lifts, escalators and cars.

Planning your active life...
Look at your weekly diary and work out when you can best find the time to exercise. This may be early in the morning, over your lunch hour, or first thing in the evening. Some part of your normal schedule may have to be changed but most people should be able to find an extra 2-3 hours a week in which to exercise. Remember, if you were a 20-a-day smoker you have a couple of hours spare to play with every day.

If you really don’t have time or don’t want to go to the gym, or do any specific exercises, there are numerous day-to-day activities that will help keep you fit and help burn-off calories.

Daily activities that can be classified as exercise:

* Walking
* Stair climbing
* Gardening
* Housework
* Cycling

Incorporating all or even some of the above as part of your every day life can dramatically increase your levels of fitness and burn off excess calories.

Work out what is best for you. You can exercise in all kinds of different ways and finding something you really enjoy will help you to continue.
