Shocking your body with a sudden low-energy food regime often appears to be working after just a few days. There’s a rapid weight loss, making it look like the plan is working. Starch is out, but protein is in; lean meats, fish, and yogurt promote weight loss because they sit in your stomach longer, so you tend to stay full longer. Another way to feel full on fewer calories is to keep fat between 20 and 25 g a day. That’s the equivalent of a few slices of avocado, a 4-ounce piece of salmon, and a handful of walnuts or almonds.

When you go out to eat, you must split an entrée (unless you’re in Paris--hey, sometimes prix fixe meals are too good to pass up!). So what’s a crash-diet addict to do? Eat consciously. Say sayonara to the fads, the gimmics, the diets passed around the Internet that were likely created by a really skinny bored person just to see how fast it would spread. Follow basic guidelines of good health.
