If you’re used to the flavor of whole milk but want less fat and fewer calories, what’s best for you--directly switching from whole milk to skim or trying lowfat milk first? You can see that it’s up to you. The important thing is to make some changes that will make a difference over the long run. Following are some calorie-cutting tips from the Dietary Guidlines: Avoid seconds of higher-calorie foods and gradually cut back on serving size.
Use low-calorie versions of foods you like.
Go easy on foods that are high in fat or sugar.
Limit alcoholic beverages.
Roast, broil, boil, steam or poach foods rather than fry them.
Select lean cuts of meat and trim visible fat.
Eat poultry and fish without skin.
